Midwife Michele usually works with a midwife assistant. Their assistants are shared with their associate midwives Karen and Natalie over at Steel City Midwives. Together both midwifery practices spent 6+ months training the assistants; they are all certified in NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation) and CPR; and they all have prior experience in birthwork.
Because the midwife assistants are birthworkers with clients of their own, they work scheduled shifts with two assistants on-call every day and they rarely, if ever, attend prenatal or postpartum visits with the midwives. This does mean that Midwife Michele can not guarantee which assistant will be coming to a birth with them, but if there is a specific assistant that a client would like to have at their birth and the assistant agrees to it, Midwife Michele can call them first to see if they are available to attend a birth, before calling the scheduled assistants on 1st and 2nd call.
